Clem Walton Park

Clem Walton Park is just downstream of the dam wall for Lake Corella. This was the water supply for the Mary Kathleen township and mine. The leaks in the dam wall mean  there is always water in this section. It is also a very popular free camp even though the road in is gravel and not maintained.

There were not too many spots left when we got in but as it was only one night we didn't mind not having much "beach" between us and the water.

The permanent water means there is a lot of birdlife. Nankin Night Heron.

Rosebud Weir

Leaving Clem Walton Park we didn't stay on the bitumen for long. Turning south onto the gravel we soon came to this fallen down fence the remains of some Afghan camel yards.

Rosebud Weir

This is the Rosebud Weir. It used to provide water for the town of Bulonga and its smelter. There is really nothing of the town left and although we had a mud map we didn't manage to find the slag piles of the old smelter.

Ballara

This is a load out system where the tram on a 2ft gauge was on the top bench and would tip its load into the wagons of the train on the 3ft 6in gauge tracks.

This is not far from the township of Ballara. Ballara seems to have been  a rail head for the mine and the township closer to the mine site  - Hightville

Wee Macgregor Tunnel

Follow the red star pickets the notes said. The track did get a bit hairy and narrow it was after all following the old 2 ft gauge tramway.

Wee Macgregor Tunnel

We did find the tunnel. It is about 70 m and means the tram didn't have to climb over the last bit of the range to haul the ore out of the mine on the other side. I am sure we would not have fitted through.

China Wall

A detour to find this quartz wall before we head to Fountain Springs for the night.

Fountain Springs

As far from the bitumen as we would go on this sojourn into the less travelled roads. Fountain Springs is a place we did find while Ann was teaching in Mt Isa. We even come in here in Ann's Morris 1100.

While not a fountain there is a permanent waterhole fed by a spring at base of that fault in the fountain range.

Fountain Springs

We camped for the night.
